What do I need to know about the fluids from my drains?

Initially post surgery the fluids will come out reddish, then pinkish and later on yellowish.  If the fluids are a bright red color, let your Surgeon know immediately.  This may be a sign of hematoma formation.  If the fluid has a bad odor, this may be a sign of infection, again you need to let your Surgeon know immediately.   Your body is great at telling you when something is not right.
